Worship is at the heart of the Cathedral's mission and life, and is offered morning and evening (and often lunchtime too) on every day of the year without exception. Our worship seeks to combine the best of the Christian tradition with a contemporary expression. We seek to offer worship of the highest quality - of music, words and actions.

For information and this weeks programme of services, please see the services page or alternatively click here for a detailed list.

Our principal services are nearly all choral, and the Cathedral Choir is internationally known and respected. The heart of our community life is the 11.00am Choral Eucharist (or celebration of the Holy Communion) on Sundays. In addition, Choral Evensong is sung on Sundays and on five other evenings each week during school term time.

Children's Church

There are bags with books and activity sheets available from the welcomers at the Cathedral door for children to use during the service. The ones labelled Pebbles for are suitable preschool children£and£ those labelled£ Rocks are for schoolchildren.

A room in South Aisle is available for a parent to take children under five years during the service. We will ensure that£parents know when the Peace is being exchanged so£they can return for the Eucharistic Prayer and take communion.

The ministry of healing, with the laying-on of hands and intercessions for the sick, is a key part of the Cathedrals life, and services take place on Saturday mornings at 9.00am (usually the first Saturday of the month) and monthly on Thursdays at 1.10pm (usually the third Thursday of the month).

There are many informal acts of worship, and a large number of special services which take place at the Cathedral - carol services, memorial services, funerals and weddings, and services to mark special occasions or celebrate particular organisations.

Baptisms (Christenings) and Weddings at Birmingham Cathedral

Baptisms
Baptism is available to babies, children and adults who live within the Cathedral's parish or who worship regularly at the Cathedral. Baptism marks the recognition of the beginning of a journey with God, which continues for the rest of our lives.

Before the date of the service is arranged we will meet with you to discuss what is involved for you and for any godparents. Baptisms of babies and children usually take place during the main Sunday service, in the company of family, friends, godparents and the whole Christian community. Baptism of adults is often at Easter.

If you live in another part of the city we will need to talk with your local priest before making any arrangements.

There is no charge for baptism.

Weddings
If you or your partner live in the Cathedral parish, or are on the Cathedral electoral roll, you are eligible to get married in Birmingham Cathedral. If you have a particular connection with this place (e.g. a former Chorister), a wedding here may also be possible. There is a charge for weddings and this varies depending on whether you would like choir, bells etc. however, the cost of the ceremony will probably form only a small part of the expenditure on the wedding. We offer wedding preparation in which we will discuss the details of the service as well as help you think through the daily reality of the wedding vows.

If either you or your partner is divorced, we will need to discuss this with you, in confidence.
We also offer blessings of weddings and services of renewal of marriage vows.
