Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent; the season leading up to the great festival of Easter.
The word ‘Lent’ comes from the old English word ‘lencten’ which means to lengthen and the hours of daylight are lengthening as Easter draws nearer.
Lent parallels Jesus’ 40 days in the desert which He spent in prayer, fasting and resisting temptation. Christians traditionally ‘give up something for Lent’. This may be a mini-fast where there is abstinence from certain foods or drinks, or they may choose to spend more time in prayer or study and less time watching TV. Often time or money is given for charitable purposes.
The season is a solemn one for the church: there are no large flower arrangements, the Gloria is replaced by ‘Lord have mercy’ and Alleluias are avoided.
The mood changes very markedly on Easter Day as we the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated with loud Alleluias and dazzling flower displays.
