Welcome to the official website for Birmingham Cathedral. We are a community of Christians who meet for worship in the magnificent eighteenth-century Cathedral Church of St Philip, situated in the heart of the city of Birmingham.
Location
The Cathedral is situated in a beautiful square and recently-restored churchyard in the heart of Birmingham's administrative and business centre. It is very close to Snow Hill and New Street stations, and many buses stop very close to it. It is open and staffed every day of the year, welcoming all who come to pray, pause awhile, admire the internationally-famous stained-glass windows by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, enjoy the Cathedral's music, or join us for worship or one of the many other activities that take place here.
Practical Information
The Cathedral is open every weekday from 07:30 to 18:30 (17:00 from late July to early September, and 17:00 for one week after Christmas and one week after Easter Sunday), and at weekends from 08:30 to 17:00. Free visitors' guides are available in a range of European and world languages. The Cathedral Shop, situated just inside the main entrance, is open on most days from 10:30 to 15:30, and provides a range of books, gifts and souvenirs. Fair-traded tea and coffee are also served here to visitors.
Visit our worship page for further information about forthcoming events and services.
The Building
The
church is a beautiful
Grade 1 listed building
of national importance.
It was designed by Thomas
Archer in the English
Baroque style, and built
between 1709 and 1715.
It became a Cathedral
in 1905 when the Diocese
of Birmingham was formed.
The word "cathedral" simply
means the church that
houses the chair of
the bishop, and so is
the central church of
the diocese. |
